Style History ~ 1920s Classicism
Kitchen & Bathroom

Kitchen - 1920s

The standard of kitchens increased during the 1920s. Typically, both hot and cold water came from the faucets. Real refrigerators began to appear in kitchens, and countertops as well as kitchen cabinets were factory-made with marble. During the 1920s, kitchens in both suburban and urban apartments were designed to be more user-friendly, with planned spaces tailored to the needs of the user, typically the housewife. It was during this time that overhead cabinets in kitchens became common, although in their standardized form, it would take some time.

The size of kitchens relatively decreased, and it was now that the concept of the "kitchen corner" was introduced. The reduced kitchen space was a result of the introduction of semi-prepared food and the decreasing time spent by the housewife in the room. Furniture was made of solid wood but, in line with the decade's style ideals, it featured simpler profiles. Light-colored kitchens became more popular, often in beige or light yellow tones with glossy linseed oil paint. The tiles on the walls decreased in size to move towards a smoother, square shape. The tiles were often set edge to edge without grout. Nickel-plated bowl-shaped drawer handles were used on 1920s drawers.

Hygiene - 1920s

In the 1920s, apartments and houses began to be designed with water closets and bathrooms, often separately located. It was likely HSB through Sven Wallander who contributed to the widespread adoption of bathrooms by considering them as part of the standard equipment in residences. However, it would take a long time before bathrooms became standard in Swedish homes.
Bathrooms were equipped with freestanding bathtubs that gradually became simpler in design. Walls and floors were typically covered with tiles to protect against water damage. White tiles were popular, as well as colored tiles in dark red, dark blue, or green. All piping was surface-mounted, and until the late 1920s, toilets were high-flush.
