At the great exhibition held in Stockholm in 1897, the general public came into contact for the first time with the new style that was known as Art Nouveau. Swedish artists and craftsmen rapidly adopted the new style. At the turn of the century, the wallpaper that inspired this wallpaper - a high-class, contemporary example of a pattern from the heyday of the Art Nouveau period - was put up in the prison director’s rooms at Östermalm Prison in Stockholm. The artists of the age often preferred flower motifs, but the selection of flowers was freer than it used to be, and the flowers were able to maintain their character.
