Note that you can choose to have the door handle delivered with metal rosettes for attachment with ordinary wood screws (for old original doors) or through bolts to fit modern doors with a 4 cm (1.57 in.) hole.
An alternative and perhaps a more aesthetically pleasing way to install the handle and any escutcheon on a modern door is to first mount wood cover plugs on both sides of the door's 40 mm (1.57 in.) hole. Use standard wood glue on the sides of the cover/plug. To facilitate installation, predrill the cover plates before mounting the rosettes and key plates. Once this is done, you can then attach a handle and any escutcheon with standard wood screws.
