- We spent a lot of time finding a good balance between the width, height, and thickness of the studs, shelves, moldings, and baseboards. Once we made these choices, we spent even more time measuring and planning to adapt to our sloped ceilings and walls. Taking the time to double-check all measurements piece by piece, thinking about the order in which the pieces should be put in place, and not taking shortcuts made a big difference in how well the bookshelf turned out in the end.

We spent many hours searching for inspiration to truly land on both the design and the construction. We realized how significant and important the difference was for the final finish with different types of decorative elements. We really found everything we wanted at Sekelskifte. For the bookshelf, we chose crown molding, brackets, decorative elements in plaster, and a substantial baseboard.

Our original plan was to build the shelf around the double doors on one side of the wall, but the large difference in ceiling height between the right and left sides of the wall made that solution impractical. Since we wanted to build the shelf all the way up to the ceiling, we realized that the double doors needed a little help to match the height of the shelf and not look spindly. We found the perfect solution at Sekelskifte in the form of a door crown molding. It also had a design that was echoed in the bookshelf's crown molding, tying them together in a very elegant way. Because of the sloped ceiling, we couldn’t attach the ceiling molding directly to the shelf, so instead, we used a straight crown molding with a backing plate.

The goal we really wanted to achieve with the shelf was IMPRESSIVE. It should take up space in the room, which has high ceilings, double doors, paneling, a tiled stove, and wide planks in both the floor and ceiling. Additionally, we needed to build in water pipes in one corner.

The principle for the construction, based on our conditions, was to have a frame with studs at the floor, ceiling, and for five shelf levels. Then, we clad the five studs with plywood, inserted real shelves with milled edges, and placed moldings with milled decorative lines on the front of the five studs. After that, we mounted the crown molding, glued decorative elements, and installed the baseboard at the bottom. The side of the shelf also got mirrors of thin moldings to add a little extra life. It was so rewarding to see it grow piece by piece, and the magical feeling when the final touch was done and the whole bookshelf stood finished before us, ready to be filled with beloved books!
